Antique Pocket Watches
Antique Pocket Watches, Beautiful TreasuresAntiques collectors usually know what they are looking for. Most have done extensive research on the particular item they find of interest, and are well armed with the knowledge it takes to make sound purchases. Popular items among collectors are antique pocket watches. These vintage time pieces pre-dated the wristwatch, and are as varied and interesting as can be. If you are not an expert, but are just starting your own collection, it is wise to obtain an appraisal before finalizing the sale, because as with any other antique, values differ greatly. Many collectors show a great interest in railroad pocket watches. Thought to be the most accurate of time pieces, they also appeal to the nostalgic side of those interested in railroading in general. Many factors go into the appraisal of antique pocket watches. Most European models are worth more than American made ones. There are certainly reputable watchmakers whose products are highly desirable, among those are Waltham, Hamilton, Illinois and Hamden. The value of a pocket watch depends on factors such as the year of manufacture, the quality of the movement and the detail in the watch itself. Some of these watches have other features such as a calendar or moon phase, or moving dials. The cases these watches are housed in can be simple, or in silver, or elaborately carved and jeweled. Luckily, there are a number of talented craftsmen who are skilled in repairing antique pocket watches which no longer work. However, you may trade some value to have a working pocket watch, as the parts used to repair it, may decrease the value of the watch. Certain Waltham antique pocket watches are in high demand. This is due to the fact that they were among the first which were mass produced with interchangeable parts. Because they were continuously being improved upon, some were manufactured in very small quantities, therefore, they are highly desirable among collectors. One such model recently sold for almost $10,000. Like every other antique, true collectors need to do their research, be familiar with the various models to begin to build a great collection of beautiful watches.
